Action Heating Up For Florida OL
Andrew Datko is excited to get back to work on the football side of things. He's been limited in recent months because of a shoulder injury. "I'm trying to come back," Datko said. "I'm doing rehab now. I was injured the game before states. I dislocated it. I won't be doing any contact drills in the spring. I'll be ready over the summer and I'll be working out hard every day." Datko, 6-foot-6 and 270 pounds, plays guard for STA and he was asked what makes him different than other O-Line prospects. "I have good quickness," he said. "And our coaches here are top notch. Just look at what we've had. We had three D1 offensive linemen two years ago and two last year. Sam (Young) started as a freshman at Notre Dame. This year, we'll probably have two or three more." The talented big man recently picked up his first scholarship offer and he's hoping to get a few more next month. "Central Florida has offered me," he said. "A couple others have talked to me and said they'll probably offer when they come by in spring. I remember last year we had like 20 scouts a day coming in for spring. That's a lot of exposure." Datko said he's been talking to FIU, Pittsburgh, and Auburn in addition to the Knights. "Those schools have called," he said. "A lot of others have been sending mail and stuff." When asked for a list of favorites, Datko spoke about a few of the schools on his wish list. "It's kinda unclear right now," he said. "I'll know better at the end of spring. Right now, UCF is there because they offered me. I wanna play in the SEC so Auburn's right there. Oh, and South Carolina too. South Florida said they might offer and they're an and coming program that could be in the top 25 for the next couple years." Datko's lone offer is from UCF. "I went up there for Junior Day," he said. "I thought the campus was real nice. Everything was within walking distance. The new stadium is coming along good. It was a real good experience." Pittsburgh is also recruiting him. "I haven't really looked into them much yet," he said. "I know Dave Wannstedt was the coach for the Dolphins. That would be a good experience playing for him." Datko said he's trying to make it to Florida and Auburn for camps this summer. "I'm trying to get up there (to Auburn) for a visit," he said. "I want to get a look at the school and they want me to come to camp." Datko carries a 4.0 GPA and will test for the first time in June.
