Jamaal Johnson a 6-foot-3, 180-pound wide receiver from Chavez High School in Houston, Texas decided to end the recruiting process when he issued a commitment to Kansas. Scout.com caught up with Chavez Head Coach Mike Jackson to get his thoughts on his star player.
“Jamaal is a big kid,” Coach Jackson began. “He is really physical. He is a legitimate 6’3, and he runs very well for a kid his size.”
“The thing that you will like about him is the fact that he has nice hands and will catch the ball out away from his body. He is a big kid so he also uses that physicality to deliver the blow to the defenders. He always gains two or three more yards when he lowers his should before he gets brought down.”
“Last year we led the city in offense, and he had eight touchdowns receptions, which led the district. Last year we had a few more weapons, so we expect him to get the ball a lot more this year.”
The coach filled us in one why his star player selected the Jayhawks.
“Jamaal was always very open with the coaches from the beginning about how he was going to make a decision,” The coach said. “His mother has some health issues. And he was going to commit to the first school that offered that had a system that he could be successful in.”
“There were some schools through here, but he told me that he was very comfortable with the Kansas coaches and style of offense.”
“Kansas got a very good recruit, and he is going to do some good things in that offense for a long time.”
As a junior, Johnson pulled in 44 receptions for 482 yards and eight touchdowns to earn All-District honors.
