SS catches up with 4.32 speedster WR John Logan

In today's Daily Recruiting Word, we catch up with two of the nation's top wide receivers in Whitney Lewis and John Logan, and two of the nation's top basketball prospects make commitments to schools in the Big XII and SEC.

Football recruiting news:
 * Lexington (Ky.) Catholic speedster John Logan is listing Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Auburn as his five favorite schools, with standing scholarship offers from all five.

Logan, a 5-10, 175 pound receiver, burst onto the national recruiting scene back in April when he clocked a camp-best 4.32 in the 40-yard dash at the Nike Camp in Alabama. Logan also posted a 33-inch vertical jump and showed great burst and cutting ability in route-running drills.

Off to a solid start in his senior campaign with three TD catches and one kickoff return for a score in his first three games, Logan says he's in no hurry to make his college decision and will likely take all five visits before he makes up his mind.

As a junior Logan rushed 81 times for 665 yards and 13 touchdowns while catching 25 passes for 501 yards and five scores.

 * Whitney Lewis , a 6-1, 210 pound wide receiver and the top overall player in the West region said he'll wait at least another month before setting up his trips but he does know three schools that he'll for sure be visiting.

"Right now, that would be Florida State, Texas and Oregon," Lewis said. "Miami is right there too and USC has really been moving up. If they keep playing like they are now, they have a great chance to move in to my top three."

Lewis earned MVP honors earlier in the year at the Nike Camp in Los Angeles, running a 4.34 in the 40, a 4.13 shuttle, benching 22 reps and posting a 34-inch vertical jump.

 * Michael Affleck , 6-3, 240 pound quarterback from Provo (Utah) Timpview has had USC as his top school for some time and was hopeful that Kyle Wright choosing Miami would open the door for a scholarship offer for him. The standout signal caller has talked to USC since Wright's commitment but he's still waiting for the offer.

"I've now talked to them twice since Kyle committed and both times they said they really want me, but I'm starting to wonder, if they want me that bad, why don't they offer," the Elite 11 quarterback said. "I don't know if there's other quarterbacks they're waiting on or what. I still like them a lot. It's my top school but I just want to know where I stand."

Affleck has set an official visit to USC when the Trojans take on Notre Dame the weekend of November 29. He had set an official trip to Arizona State for Septemeber 28 but has to re-schedule it due to a school function. Arizona and Colorado are also under consideration.

 * "Right now I like Tennessee, Ohio State, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Penn State and Oklahoma," standout defensive lineman Brandon Maupin told Student Sports correspondent Mike Schmidt.

The 6-5, 270 pound West Chester (Ohio) Lakota West standout has more than 20 scholarship offers and is one of the Buckeye State's top prospects with his combination of size and athleticism.

So far this fall Maupin has 20 tackles and four sacks through his first three games. He has made unofficial visits to Pitt when they played Texas A&M and to Ohio State versus Texas Tech.

"Three schools I would like to visit (officially) for sure are Tennessee, Ohio State and Notre Dame," Maupin said. He has a 3.0 GPA and has scored an 880 on the SAT.

 Boys Basketball commitments:

* Portland (Ore.) Jefferson swingman Thomas Gardner has committed to Quin Snyder and the Missouri Tigers.

The 6-5, 200 pounder can play either shooting guard or small forward at the college level and is one of the most athletic players in the country. He averaged 15.5 points and seven rebounds a game as a junior, and chose the Tigers over offers from UConn, Kansas, Virginia and others. He is widely considered to be amongst the Top 100 players in the Class of 2003.

 * The South Carolina Gamecocks have landed a commitment from 6-9, 200 pound forward Brandon Wallace . Widely considered the top senior player in the state, Wallace averaged 22 points and 14 rebounds as a junior at Aiken (S.C.) Silver Bluff.

Wallace will need to add beef to survive in the pant in the SEC, but his athleticism and soft touch have made him a consensus pick for one the nation's top 100 prospects. He chose USC over offers from Clemson, Auburn, Georgia and Georgia Tech.

 Girls Basketball commitments:

* Clinton County High School girls' basketball standout Angela Brown has committed to national power Old Dominion.

The 6-foot-5 Brown, a firstteam member of The CourierJournal's All-State team, picked the Lady Monarchs over Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Southern Mississippi, Purdue and Jacksonville.

''I knew after meeting with coach (Wendy) Larry and her staff and spending time with the players that I would have a great four years there,'' Brown said. ''I'm excited.''

She averaged 17.3 points and 11.8 rebounds last season, helping the Lady Bulldogs win their first Fourth Region title.

 * Sheldon Clark's Kelli Jo Moore has committed to Marshall. The 6-2 Moore averaged 21.7 points and 12.3 rebounds last season.

She also considered the University of Kentucky, Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky and Ohio University.
