Jameel Owens, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound four-star wide receiver from Muskogee (Okla.), continues to deny a leader and says he doesn't plan to narrow down his choice until the end of summer.
"Right now I'm still looking at everybody," Owens said. "I'll narrow it down to my top five before the summer is over, though."
Owens, ranked No. 4 in the Midlands by Scout.com, grew up following Oklahoma and admits that he likes the Sooners, who were the first favorite he mentioned. "I used to watch them because they won. It was that simple," he said. "They have great coaches and are still a top team every year. They have great athletes there and produce great players every year.
"Coach Jackie Shipp (defensive line) is recruiting me and we have a good relationship," Owens said. "We talk regularly and he's from my home town (Muskogee) and still has family here. We have a lot in common."
The Sooners are only two hours from Owens' house and he's already attended their junior day and spring game.
The only other school that Owens has already visited is in-state rival, Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are about one and half hours away from home. "But I definitely plan on visiting schools this summer," he said. "I'm talking it over with my coach, but I'll probably try to visit Arkansas, LSU and Florida."
Owens favors Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Florida, Arkansas and LSU and all of his favorites have offered except for Florida. He does plan to attend the Gator camp in July. "Florida won the national championship," he said. "They are always a top program and there's a lot to like about them. I talk with their wide receiver coach (Billy Gonzales) and he says they really like me and they want to see me at their camp. They said they like what they saw on my tape, but that they really need to see me in person."
He also has offers from Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech, Nebraska and Colorado.
"I'll take my visits before I commit," Owens said. "I don't want to rush into it. I wan to make sure I'll fit into the offense and I want to check out who they are recruiting and how deep they are."
Owens also plays the outfield in baseball, however he only plans to play football in college.
Owens reports a 2.5 core GPA and a 22 ACT.
