BURNABY, BC (Scout.com) - Skyline has won it five times, Eastlake won the crown in 2006. So when 21 teams arrived at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex Saturday, it was thought that the Spartans and Wolves would duke it out to take the Big Kahuna Passing Challenge trophy - as well as bragging rights for another year - home with them. No one told Ferris how the script was supposed to be written.
The Saxons, fueled by smart play that allowed them to take advantage of special 7-7 rules and purposeful ball control - as well as the occasional, well-timed bomb to star receiver
Jared Karstetter
, won back-to-back one-point games over Skyline and Eastlake to take the Big Kahuna title back to Spokane, Wash.
Karstetter, who won Offensive MVP honors, wasn't the only standout performer.
McKenzie Murphy
won the Defensive MVP award, and
Shawn Stockton
was also named to the all-tournament defensive team.
Eastlake, the other finalist - also had three players end up on all-tournament teams. Quarterback
Ryan Robertson
and WR
Cory Mackay
earned all-offense honors, while
Kolby Kemp
finished strong on the all-defense team.
Here is the order of finish:
1) Ferris
2) Eastlake
3) Skyline
4) Shelton
5) Lord Tweedsmuir
6) Mount Vernon
7) Elma
8) West Vancouver
Here are the all-tournament teams:
All-Offense
:
MVP
: Jared Karstetter - Ferris
Adam Berger
- Lord Tweedsmuir
Gino Simone
- Skyline
Ryan Robertson - Eastlake
Cory Mackay - Eastlake
All-Defense
:
MVP
: McKenzie Murphy - Ferris
Cameron Lusuegro
- Skyline
Shawn Stockton - Ferris
Torrance Baylis
- Mount Vernon
Kolby Kemp - Eastlake
A huge thank you to Farhan Lalji and his wife Mary for always putting on a great show in Burnaby, and to all the other volunteers, referees and concessions folks that make Big Kahuna the best passing challenge in the Northwest!
