In his heart, he'd just be delaying the inevitable. That's what Trevor Guyton, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive tackle from Redmond, Wash. told Scout.com Thursday night after announcing his verbal commitment to California over Washington, among many others. | |||

The Huskies were the biggest challengers, and Guyton had said earlier in the summer that he was going to wait to see how the local team did before making his decision. Clearly his heart was in a different place. "I did it on Monday, but I didn't tell anyone because I wanted to make sure it was right," Guyton said of his verbal commitment. "I had been thinking about it for a while. I wanted to wait to see what Washington would do, but it would just be dragging it out because I probably would have gone to Cal anyway. So I just wanted to do it now." So what swung the recruiting pendulum in the favor of the Golden Bears? "The campus and school are amazing," he said. "The coaches were what I was looking for. They didn't baby me when I went down there, but they told me that they wanted me and they told me that they want to win. All the teams do that, but with them it just felt different. "I liked the way Coach (Ken) Delgado worked me out. He didn't cut me any slack. I really liked that. A coach that can push me that hard can do me a lot of good." Since his commitment to Cal on Monday, Guyton has called up all the other coaches involved in his recruitment to let him know that he'll be heading to Berkeley next fall. "I told everyone that I'm committed," he said. (Washington) Coach (Mike) Denbrock told me that he still wanted to recruit me, and I told him that was alright but I was still solid with my commitment. Same thing with (Oregon) Coach (Robin) Pflugrad and Coach (Josh) Wilcox at Boise State. "And that's another thing. Of all the players I talked to that play for other schools, they had nothing bad to say about Cal. With a lot of other schools, there may have been some negative things, but with Cal, no one had any bad things to say about them." Guyton is ranked as the No. 6 player in the state of Washington and No. 16 player in the Northwest region by Scout.com. Trevor Guyton Scout.com profile |
