Camping to Gain Exposure

Philadelphia, Pa., product Ryan McGinn just finished up camp trips to Penn State, Temple and Villanova and took an unofficial visit to Delaware with his family to check out what the Blue Hens have to offer. McGinn will depend on his senior season when looking for scholarship offers and must prove he is worth of a Division I offer.

Ryan McGinn played with great intensity for St. Joseph’s Prep last season and that work ethic and his ability to shed blocks is what made him so effective against the run, however his skill set will most likely limit him to playing with his hand on the ground at the next level and with a 6-foot-3, 230-pound frame, he does come in a bit undersized at defensive end. McGinn just made three camp stops and a visit over the past several weeks and is hoping to garner a few scholarship offers during his senior season.

“I camped at Penn State, Temple and Villanova and am planning on camping at Delaware, James Madison and Towson if I can,” McGinn said. “I actually went down and toured the campus at Delaware today with my mother and liked it a lot down there. I have a friend whose older brother played for Delaware and just graduated and he has had nothing but good things to say about the program and school.”

“Coach Brooks said that Temple likes my motor and work ethic a lot, however they do have concerns with my lack of size at defensive end right now which seems to be one thing holding me back,” McGinn explained. “I also went up to Penn State with Mark Wedderburn for camp and while I grew up a fan, would love to play there and performed really well at camp according to the staff, I have to be realistic with the schools I focus on right now obviously. Villanova was also a camp I attended, however it was the day after Temple which was a grueling camp, so I was really, really tired and did not stand out there like I did at other camps which was disappointing.”

When it comes to reputation, McGinn comes as highly regarded by teammates as a player can get and it is obvious talking to the other players on his team that his work ethic not only shows up on the field, but in the weight room and classroom as well. Last season he split time for The Prep, notching 45 tackles, forcing four fumbles and batting down eight passes. He also returned an interception for a touchdown. Academically, McGinn holds a 3.2 core GPA and scored a 950 on his SAT, which he plans to re-take sometime this fall. If McGinn can keep his focus on adding good weight, developing better pass rushing skills and increasing his speed, he will definitely have a chance at garnering a few offers at the Division I level this year.
