"I figured it's about time," Beachum said. "I feel like I'm pretty much decided and didn't want to wait any longer. I've already made up my mind, but I'm not telling anyone until next Sunday. Even the coaches won't know until the press conference."
Also making his announcement that day is Beachum's teammate, linebacker Taylor Hill.
Beachum, ranked No. 44 in the Midwest by Scout.com and the nation's No. 41 running back, says the final five schools he was considering were Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State, Florida State and LSU. All of them have offered he said and Beachum claims a total of 27 offers.
"It's going to be one of those five," he said. "These schools fit me the best. They have everything I was looking for as far as football and academics are concerned. I plan on majoring in marketing or communications in college and they all have great programs. Also, all five are recruiting me for running back."
He attended camps at Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan, but neither the Buckeyes nor Wolverines ever offered. "The Penn State camp was really nice," Beachum said. "I liked how hands-on the coaches were and how all of them got involved. It's a really nice area too."
The only other school in his top five that he has already visited is Wisconsin. "I love coach Bret Bielema," Beachum said. "He's a great guy and a very good coach. I love what he's done there and how he runs things. He's really hands on with all the players and has a great relationship with them. He gives his players a lot of respect and say in the plays and stuff."
Another coach that Beachum is a big fan of is Bobby Bowden of Florida State. "He's amazing," Beachum said. "He's a great coach and a living legend. It would be a great opportunity to go and play for a dream school like Florida State. I've always followed them and am a big fan of their program."
The other SEC school that Beachum is considering is LSU. "I love their style," he said. "They play fast and I could see myself playing there. I like coach (defensive coordinator) Bo Pelini because he's from Ohio and is a local guy. I have a good relationship with him."
With a 3.3 core GPA and a 19 ACT, Beachum says that academics are also very important to him. "That's what I like about Nebraska," he said. "They have great academics and one of the highest graduations rates in the country. They also have a great team with a lot of tradition."
