Colin Shumate, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound three-star linebacker/fullback from Las Vegas, Nev., now has a total of three scholarship offers. His latest offers are from San Diego State and Wyoming, with the first coming from Colorado State.
"I'd like to go where I can get a great education and where I fit in and really get along with my position coach," Shumate said. "I hope to go to college and become a better player before I'm done."
Shumate, ranked No. 127 in the West by Scout.com, favors Nebraska slightly over California, San Diego State and Stanford. He attended camps at Nebraska and UNLV.
"The Nebraska camp was great," he said. "Their facilities are amazing and it was like nothing I've seen before. I love how it's all about football there and I like my recruiting coach, Joe Rudolph. He says that I'm high on their list and they just want to see me play this season. They are looking at me for linebacker and possibly fullback."
He says the school that is recruiting him the hardest is San Diego State. "I constantly hear from them," Shumate said. "I get about three to five handwritten letters from them per week."
Shumate says that like Nebraska, both Cal and Stanford said they are waiting to see him play during the season. "Last year was my first year at linebacker and I'm looking forward to going out there this year and proving myself," Shumate said.
"I really like California and the location is great. I like Stanford a lot too because of their academics. I've sent them my application and I know I'm qualified for them. Now the coaches are just evaluating me and seeing if they'll offer."
Shumate hasn't scheduled any official visits and says he has no timetable for making a decision. "I'm just looking forward to playing this season, taking some visits and seeing who else offers."
He reports a 3.8 core GPA and a 1700 SAT and 25 ACT.
