Covaughn Deboskie, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound four-star running back from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., has scholarship offers from schools across the country and his top six is just as diverse.
Deboskie, ranked No. 22 in the Southwest by Scout.com, said he favors California slightly over Stanford, Arizona State, Alabama, Florida and Clemson and all have offered him (19 total).
"Location doesn't matter to me," he said. "I have friends or family in basically all of those places. I'm just excited to start taking my visits and really get to know the environment. I want to see where I'm gonna live and what my life is gonna be like. I won't even think about committing until I take my officials."
Although he hasn't scheduled any official visits yet, he has already been to Cal, Stanford and Arizona State.
"Cal has a lot to offer," he said. "They have great dorms rooms that are really big, plus the education is amazing. Their senior running back is leaving so I'd have a chance to play early. I also get along with the coaches really well.
"I also like the Stanford coaches, especially (head coach) Jim Harbaugh. He's very enthusiastic and young and they are excited about their up-coming season. I think they have pretty good players and he's a player's coach. They are gonna play their hearts out for him this year."
Another coach that Deboskie really likes is Arizona State's new head coach, Dennis Erickson. "Coach Erickson is a great guy and he talks with me a lot," he said. "It's always great when a head coach wants to talk with you. That means a lot. He also is really high on academics and thinks that I'd be a perfect fit for the honors program there.
"I also really like that they are upgrading their indoor practice field, so they won't have to practice so much in the heat. They are a real hard-working team."
Deboskie was planning on visiting Florida and Clemson during July as well, but couldn't fit it in with his own team's practice schedule. "I'd really like to visit those teams though," he said. "I like Florida because of coach Urban Meyer. He's real and we don't just talk about football. That stands out because it makes me feel like he's interested in more for more than just football.
"I'd like to visit Alabama too and see what it's like there," he said. "We have a family friend who lives in Alabama and I know a lot of people from there. They have great tradition and they need running backs.
"I don't have any family in South Carolina, but I like Clemson because of how they use C.J. Spiller," Deboskie said. "Plus, when I get there they are going to need helping running the ball and I think I'd have a shot to play early."
Deboskie used to list Michigan in his top six, but dropped the Wolverines after running back Sam McGuffie from Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, Texas, committed.
He reports a 4.1 core GPA and a 1380 SAT (three parts), which he is retaking on October 4.
