When we last spoke with Camden Catholic High School tight end Matt Brierley his recruiting picture was not bursting with options, but since then things have started to open up for him. Many programs have been in contact since then inquiring about the Cherry Hill, N.J., native and a solid senior year could do wonders for his future.
While
Matt Brierley
may not be the downfield threat that former Camden Catholic tight end
Mike Ragone
was, he certainly has the potential to be a Division I player and will have an opportunity to show that this season as one of the main targets for quarterback
Marc Lucarini
in the Irish offense. This 6-foot-6, 205-pounder missed most of last season with a tailbone injury, however with the recent loss of running back
Greg Wanamaker
, he will be counted on even more to produce this season.
“Since talking to you guys last I have had a number of colleges get in contact with me or my head coach,” Brierley said. “Coach (Allen) Mogridge at
Buffalo
, Coach (Joe) Susan at
Rutgers
, Coach (Brian) Angelichio at
Pittsburgh
and other Division I-AA programs have all inquired about me recently.
Wisconsin
is another school that just contacted me and wants my senior film after my first few games which is what all schools have been saying. It sounds like if I go put it together this season like I know I can I could have some opportunities waiting for me.”
“I also went and camped at
Temple
and Coach Dees said they just need to see the first few games of my senior year,” Brierley explained. “I had a good time at camp because they worked us really hard and were tough on us. I had a really good time and like Coach Dees a lot. It’s also pretty nice down there at Temple.”
Camden Catholic will replace Wanamaker with a speedier, shiftier running back and does have an incoming junior at wide receiver that will help ease the load, however it is clear that Brierley will need to step up in a big way this season. With his size and 4.73 40-yard dash speed, do not be surprised if he picks up some offers with a successful senior campaign.
