Indiana HS: Week One Report

The Indiana high school season got started over the weekend and all the top prospects from the state were in action. Here are some notes on how some of the top players fared.

Griffith RB/WR David Alexander, the recent recipient of a Toledo offer, got his season off with a bang. In a 35-21 win over Morton, the senior ripped off 4 touchdown runs and finished with 185 yards on 21 carried.

Carmel scored a big victory over Cathedral Friday night. Contributing largely to the win was senior tailback Aaron King who carried 26 times for 180 yards and 2 touchdowns, one of which was the go-ahead score.

The state's top running back, Darius Willis showed he deserved that lofty ranking as he ran for 266 yards and 3 touchdowns on 24 carries as Franklin Central topped Decatur Central.

Over at Ben Davis, the Giants had a scare, but pulled out a 46-37 win over Perry Meridian. Star QB Marquiess Gray was benched for the opening series for disciplinary reasons, but came in to complete 4 of 10 passes for 58 yards and rush for 42 more and the final touchdown that sealed the game.

Central Michigan commit Lavarus Williams returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown for Ben Davis. Indiana commit Tandon Doss had a big night, rushing for 128 yards and a touchdown on only four carries, catching three passes for 68 yards and a score and returning a kickoff 88 yards for his third touchdown on the night.

The big news out of the weekend though was powerhouse Warren Central, again a state title favorite falling at the hands of Merrillville. The 17-10 defeat snapped the Warriors' 21-game win streak.
