Fresno (Calif.) Edison and cornerbacks are synonymous with each other, and longtime defensive backs coach Tony Perry has a hard time distinguishing who the best prospect to play for the Tigers secondary is.
But one guy he thinks could be the best ever has yet to begin his junior season, and only played three games of varsity football during his sophomore season.
Because of Courtney Viney, the #2 cornerback in the West last year and Robert Golden, the #1 cornerback in the West in this class, Harris got his reps on JV. But with Viney now at UCLA, Harris will be the corner opposite Golden.
So despite playing very little on varsity, colleges are still intrigued by Harris, and the second school to verbally offer Harris has come through.
"Arizona just offered him a few weeks ago," said Perry. "Cliff is just beginning to realize how good he can be. Playing with the guys all spring (several former Edison players worked out with Perry), he held his own. He's going to be the best when its all done. All the older guys are saying that."
Utah first offered Harris during the spring, a spring that Harris celebrated his arrival on the scene.
After a strong showing at the L.A. Nike Camp, Harris really came on at the Scout.com Combine in Los Angeles, earning all-combine honors, and being called by combine DB coach Don Cox "the best sophomore I've worked with out here." Harris followed it up with an all-Sparta team selection at the B2G Elite Football Program.
Harris and his Edison team will kickoff the 2007 season with Madera.
