Russellville's Caleb Mitchell is a two sport athlete, and the talented senior is drawing interest from both sports. He talks with ScoutSouth.com about the latest developments in baseball and football.

“I went down to Orange Beach for a baseball showcase a couple weeks back, and I did pretty good,” Caleb Mitchell tells us from his home in Russellville, (Ala).

“I had the fastest 60-time at the showcase. I ran the 60 in 6.6 flat. I actually ran it faster than that in the qualifying showcase. I ran a 6.56 there,” Mitchell recalled. “I talked to a Mariners scout after it was over, and he told me to keep doing what I was doing and things would work out well for me.”

“I also heard that Mississippi State was interested in me afterward, but I don’t know. I had fun doing it. I hit the ball pretty well too. I was like one-for-two, or two-for-two when I was playing. We had guys from 11 different states playing in the thing.”

Mitchell also tells us the latest in his recruitment as a football player.

“I’m still hearing from the same schools,” he said. “I get a ton of mail since the text messaging has stopped. 'Bama, Arkansas, Vandy, Marshall, UAB, Army, Southern Miss and Colorado are the schools I hear the most from.”
“I have been invited to Arkansas, and I’m going out there this weekend to see their opener. It will be an unofficial visit, but I might take an official later in the season if it’s possible.”

“I’m also going to go out to Colorado for a game in September. I want to go out there and see what it’s like. They have been sending me a lot of stuff in the mail lately, and they talk favorable.”

“I’m going to go to a Southern Miss game this season too. I’m probably going to watch the UT-Martin game because I would like to see Taz (Tillery) play. I think he’s going to start for UT-Martin, or play in the rotation."

“Of course, I’m going to go to some 'Bama games this season. They have invited me down to a game, but I don’t know what games I’ll be going to yet. I can go see 'Bama at any home game."

We talked with Mitchell about the upcoming season, and the Deshler game Friday night.

“Man, we got started off rough in the jamboree. We got drilled by Tuscaloosa County. We didn’t play like a Russellville team. We didn’t look like a Russellville team, and we didn’t do much. I was cramping up, and that’s the first time that has ever happened to me in a game. It was pretty embarrassing," he said.

“Coach Goodwin has killed us in practice this week, and I think we’re starting to look a little better. It’s the best practices we’ve had this season.”

So what does Mitchell think this means for the Deshler game?

“I’m not worried about it,” he said. “I think we’ll come out looking more like Russellville this week. We’ve worked on everything this week. We have a long way to go before we are a good team, but I think we can pull it together."
