Fritz Rock, a 6-foot-0, 180-pound wide receiver from Wayzata High in Plymouth, Minn., was probably the top sophomore performer at the U.S. Army Junior Combine this January. He posted 4.57 forty-yard dash and a 32-inch vertical leap.
Rock did not stop there as he had successful camp stops at schools like Minnesota, Notre Dame, Illinois, Iowa State and Michigan this summer. Illinois and Minnesota both verbally offered the standout receiver after the camps concluded, and on September 1st the Golden Gophers made it official.
“I was happy and excited,” Rock said of the emotion after he got his offer in the mail. “It felt good.”
Rock is receiving plenty of attention from schools nationwide, and while he remains completely open, six schools stand out as far as contact is concerned.
“Wisconsin, Miami (FL), Nebraska, Notre Dame, Florida and of course Minnesota are sort of my top six for right now,” Rock informed.
“There are around 40 different schools that are sending me letters and keeping in contact. I would definitely be interested in any elite programs that may offer.”
The Cornhuskers have been showing Rock a lot of attention already, and he will be making a trip to Lincoln this weekend for an unofficial visit.
“I know I want a Nebraska offer,” the Minnesota standout said. “I am going to be going to Nebraska this weekend for the USC game.”
As a sophomore, Rock racked up over 150 yards receiving and one touchdown, but he has already surpassed those numbers in 2007.
“The season is going good,” Rock began. “We are 2-0. So far I have seven catches for 112 yards and three touchdowns. I am also returning kicks.”
Rock was raised in Miami, Fla., so there is little wonder that he was a big Hurricane fan growing up.
“I always rooted for Miami,” Rock stated. “I watched guys like Ed Reed. I lived there from the time I was born until I was about 14, so I basically grew up watching the ‘U’.”
Rock was proud of his performance at the Army Combine this year, but he is hopeful to do even better next year.
“I want to show people that I am one of the best players at my position,” Rock began. “My goal is to do better than I did last year and let people know that I am a player that they should be watching.”
