Heavner, 6-2, 205 pounds was one of the top signal callers we saw at the Nike Camp in College Station over the summer. He tested very well running a 4.75 in the 40, jumped 30 inches in the vertical and did 20 reps on the bench. He also threw the ball well showing and is the kind of quarterback who can make plays with his arm or legs.
As a junior, Heavner threw for over 1,800 yards, rushed for another 300 and totaled 18 touchdowns.
“There was a lot of things I likes about Arizona," Heavner said. "For one, they have a lot of Texas players on the roster so I felt very comfortable there. I can see it being like a home away from home. The weather is great and I'm really not a cold weather guy. Depth chart wise, the starting quarterback (Jason Johnson) is a senior so I can think I'll be able to come in and compete for a spot right away.
"Academically, I felt comfortable with the school and the teachers I met and my mom was happy with their academic support as well. It's a real family atmosphere at Arizona and I'm really comfortable with the coaching staff. It's far away from home but at the same time, I know I'll be happy there and that was the most important thing."
New Mexico and Oklahoma State had also offered Heavner a scholarship.
"I thought about committing later and taking some trips but Arizona was just the perfect place for me," Heavner said. "I didn't think there was any need to put it off when I knew that was where I wanted to go."
