Kicker Getting Looks
"We are 5-1 with a big game (tonight)," Jake Wieclaw said. "Hopefully we finish strong through the rest of the season." Wieclaw is having an excellent season on his own. He handles the kicking duties and plays wide receiver. "I have a personal best of 52 yards this year," he said. "I set the state record for career field goals with 46. And I'm probably over 40 yards on my punts. I'm having a good season. Plus, at receiver, I have 20-some catches for 300-some yards." Wieclaw, 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, hasn't had a chance to nail any game winners yet this season. He almost did his freshman year. "It was the second game of the season and I kicked what would've been the game-winner with like 30 seconds left. Then the other team had a good kickoff return and threw a bomb and beat us in the final seconds." The talented kicker doesn't have any Division 1 offers yet but he believes he's close. "I'm looking at two colleges mainly," he said. "They are U of I and Miami. They're each calling each week and I've talked to them a lot." Wieclaw talked some about each school. Illinois -- "It's a good program that's on the upswing. Within the next four years, they're gonna have one helluva team. I went to the Penn State game and it was real impressive. I really like what they're doing and the coaches are cool." Miami -- "I only know what I've heard and what I've been told. I'm trying to get down to a game at some point. I've heard it's amazing down there and everyone knows about the tradition they have. I'll take an official visit down there after the season."
