Deion Walker, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound five-star wide receiver from Christchurch, Va., has over 45 scholarship offers and says he's still trying to narrow his choices down.
"I'm looking for a team that has a great offense and that passes the ball a lot," he said. "That's the main thing for me. I also want a school that is in a good environment."
Walker continues to deny a leader but now admits that Penn State, Florida State and LSU are his favorite three. "I haven't seen everybody, so it's hard to say which school stands out, but at this point I probably like Penn State, Florida State and LSU the most."
Walker, ranked the No. 6 wide receiver in the country by Scout.com, took an official visit to Penn State on Sept. 8. "I love the fans in the student section," he said. "The made me feel really welcome and chanted my name and were screaming for me to choose Penn State. I've never experienced something like that before.
"I also really like the offense at Penn State," Walker said. "They throw the ball really well and always have really good quarterbacks and receivers."
Next up for Walker is an official trip to Florida State tomorrow, Oct. 6. "I really love the tradition at Florida State and it's an amazing environment over there," he said. "I like the coaches too and Bobby Bowden is a legend."
Walker also has an official visit set up to Notre Dame for Nov. 3. "They told me that they really need receivers and that it would be a great opportunity to come in and play," he said. "They need playmakers there and I think I'd be able to make an impact there. I'm not too worried about how they are looking right now. I know they are struggling, but the way I see it is that I could go there and help them out."
Trailing Penn State, Florida State and LSU are Notre Dame, California, USC, Florida, Nebraska and Michigan. "I'm still undecided as to where I'm gonna take my other visits," he admitted. "I may go out west to Cal and USC, but I'd also like to check out some of the others like Florida or LSU or Michigan. I'm not sure yet.
"I really like LSU and USC because they are the top two programs in the country right now," he said. "I love the environment at LSU. It's great over there. For USC, I like their offense because it's so wide receiver happy. They always have the best receivers."
Walker acknowledges that he has a rather eclectic mix of favorites, but says to him that doesn't matter. "I've lived in a big city my whole life, but I go to a small school now so I feel like I could handle any type of environment," he said. "I'm not too concerned about a school being in a college town or a city or anything. As long as I'm comfortable that is all that matters."
He says he plans to make his decision after he takes his visits. "I'd like to decide in early December," he said. "By then I'll have seen everything and should be able to decide."
Walker has suffered from turf toe for most of the season and has only played one full game. Christchurch is 1-3, but Walker says he's going to be back in action next week after their bye-week.
He reports a 3.2 core GPA and a 21 ACT.
