A great season from TE Austin Briehl has Notre Dame Prep in the state championship and more schools…
Briehl Big on Heart
Injuries took the majority of Austin Briehl's sophomore and junior seasons. But the Notre Dame Prep (Scottsdale, AZ) tight end looked good enough in the latter half of his junior year and in the spring evaluation period to earn offers from Army, Air Force and UNLV. He recently took an unofficial to Air Force and liked what he saw, "I like the atmosphere. They were playing with heart. Their coach says they don't always have the best athletes but all of them will play with heart," says Briehl. The 6-5 225 pounder is interested in becoming a fighter pilot and the military commitment does not scare him away, "I would like to serve our country, " he says. The campus and facilities were also favorites of Briehl. He comments on both, "The facilities are state of the art. They have a huge weight room and a ten practice fields. The stadium is beautiful." He adds, "The campus is really nice. It is beautiful, right below the Rockies." Briehl was able to talk with Falcon head coach Troy Calhoun. "He says Air Force is a great place. Once you graduate, you are set for the rest of your life…and you are. Those are the main things he emphasizes," Briehl comments. Austin has already started the application process but has not been admitted into the academy at this point. He maintains a 3.7 GPA and scored a 1550 on the three-part SAT (will retake). The Falcons played host to UNLV, another school that has offered. He says he paid attention to what they were doing but did not speak to anyone on the coaching staff. At this point, Briehl is not ready to name a favorite but Army, Air Force and UNLV all could get official visits from Briehl. He has recently sent out senior footage to Colorado State, UTEP, Montana and Wyoming at those schools' request. On the year, Notre Dame is 5-1 and Austin has caught 10 passes for 168 yards and 1 touchdown (4 game stats). He comments on his game, "I catch the ball well and my blocking is getting better every game." He adds, "I play with a lot of heart." Briehl's father Tom played football at Stanford and in the NFL for several years. Austin and his Notre Dame teammates travel to California to play Marin High School this week.
