Colin Shumate, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound three-star linebacker from Las Vegas, Nev., has set up his first official visit and will be going to Boise State for the Oct. 13 weekend. He says the Broncos are recruiting him the hardest, although they haven't offered him a scholarship yet.
"I hear from them regularly, but they haven't offered," Shumate said. "They have a great program and I'm really excited about my trip and to learn more about them. I heard Boise is a great place and I like the success they've had recently. I think the coaches will only continue to make them better."
Shumate's only offers are still from San Diego State, Wyoming and Colorado State, but he says that Nebraska, Stanford and California are still recruiting him. He's been hoping for an offer from the Huskers since the summer, but it hasn't happened.
"They've all requested some film," he said. "I heard from each of them about three weeks ago, but it's been pretty quiet since then. I'm really open to whatever happens and don't see myself making a decision anytime soon. I want to see what else happens with these schools and be 100 percent sure."
He now favors Boise State slightly over Nebraska, San Diego State, Wyoming and Colorado State. "Nebraska seems to slowly be turning it around," he said. "They seem to get a little better every year and they are a contender for the Big 12 North championship for sure."
Although it wasn't an official visit, Shumate attended the San Diego State/Portland State game in San Diego on Sept. 22. "San Diego State has a pretty young program and they've got new coaches that are trying to turn things around," he said. "Once they get their own recruits in they should be able to improve.
"I really like San Diego," he said. "It has the best weather in the country and is a great city. It's just a pretty appealing place."
Shumate is ranked the No. 35 middle linebacker in the country by Scout.com.
Las Vegas High School is now 4-3. Shumate has 50 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two fumbles caused, one fumble recovered and one sack.
He reports a 3.8 core GPA and a 1700 SAT and 25 ACT.
