Devonte Christopher, the 6-foot-0, 175-pound three-star athlete from Canyon Springs High School in Las Vegas, Nev., says he has over 10 scholarship offers. "I'm still pretty open and they are all about even right now," Christopher said. "I still want to take the rest of my visits."
Although Christopher denies a leader, he favors UNLV, Stanford, Nebraska, Arizona and Colorado. He has already taken an official visit to Nebraska on Sept. 15 and Stanford on Oct. 12.
"My Stanford visit was great," said Scout.com's No. 43 safety. "I met a lot of really great new people. I was just impressed with how they were all smart and intellectual people. I love what they have to offer academically.
"Also the football program is really young and are just having problems putting games away," he said. "But they are an exciting team and will be getting even better. Coach Jim Harbaugh in one season already beat USC and that's big."
Christopher admits that his parents are favoring the Cardinal. "Everyone in my family wants me to go to Stanford," he said. "They love their academic prestige and everything about the program."
While the Cardinal are recruiting him as a quarterback, Christopher says Nebraska (where he visited on Sept. 15) is recruiting him as a cornerback. "Nebraska has the best fans in the country," he said. "They all knew our names when we got there and showed us a lot of respect. Everyone was just super friendly.
"I also like how hard Nebraska plays and works," he said. "They are really well-coached and I really think they'll finish strong."
This coming weekend, Oct. 20, Christopher is visiting Colorado. He says the Buffs are recruiting him as a safety. The only other school recruiting him as a safety is Arizona, while UNLV wants him as a quarterback.
"My favorite position is quarterback," he said. "That's what I've been playing since I was a kid. That's what I like about UNLV…they run a spread offense like my school and I think I'd fit in well there. I could probably come in and know the offense and the system they run.
"But quarterback isn't necessarily what I'm gonna play in college. Just because I like quarterback doesn't mean I won't even think about playing safety or corner," he said.
Christopher has helped lead his team to a 6-1 record with 1900 yards passing, 26 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed 42 times for over 400 yards and six touchdowns.
"I'm a leader on the field and very vocal," he said. "I can get the ball out fast and spread it around. I'm very athletic and play smart. I have great speed and anticipation, but I want to put on more weight and get stronger."
Christopher benches 205 pounds and has a 455 pounds squat.
Christopher says that as a youngster he followed Miami, Texas and Florida State. "They were just always the big programs and winning a lot," he said. "They would always be on TV."
He reports a 4.1 core GPA and a 1470 three-part SAT.
