Is Baker the Midwest's Top Junior Back?
"I know I have the #1 running back in the midwest," Tim Hopkins emphatically stated. The head coach of Oak Park High (Oak Park, MI) has seen some talented players over the years, but he hasn't ever had a back as good as his junior star Edwin Baker. "He'll impress you with his speed and his build, he's very solid," Hopkins said, "he reminds me of Emmitt Smith but with LT's speed." That is big talk and it might initially sound like head coach hyperbole, but through six games this year, Baker had rushed for 1295 yards and eight touchdowns on 113 carries (11.46 yards per carry). Throw in track star speed and good classroom numbers and you have a prospect who has a legitimate claim at begin the top junior back in the midwest. "Edwin runs a 10.4 in the 100 meters and he has a 3.2 GPA and a 16 on his ACT which he will have the chance to retake a number of times." The 5'11, 200-lb Baker visited nearby Ann Arbor for the Michigan-Oregon game and has received interest from the Wolverines as well as a who's who of College Football powers. "Oh man, we're getting letters from everywhere," Coach Hopkins reported, "Michigan, Iowa, Michigan State, Florida, Tennessee, Coach Carroll at USC and Coach Bowden at Florida State." Baker doesn't have any favorites at this time, but Hopkins knows his star prospect will have many options open for him to pursue as the process goes along. "Edwin is my global guy, he's a national guy. He'll have his choice of what he wants and where he wants from almost any conference in America."
