Easily one of the top performers in the Grand Canyon state has been Scottsdale (AZ) Saguaro quarterback Tim Ruben.
He was a key cog in Saguaro’s state title run last year and has been just as effective, if not more so, as last year. He led the Sabercats to an undefeated season and the #1 playoff seed behind 1,405 rushing yards, 1,416 yards passing and 30 total touchdowns.
Despite the success, recruiting has been slow for Ruben to this point. The only school that has been in contact has been Penn. He informs us that they called him last week, requested film and expressed an interest in him as either a defensive back or running back.
Cornerback is not an unfamiliar position. He played the position as a sophomore and until the third game of his junior season. An injury to starter TJ Rausch forced him into the QB spot and he has not looked back.
At 6-0 180, Ruben does not have the ideal size to play QB and he admits it, “With a little more height, I would love to play quarterback, “he adds, “But I am down to play any position as long as I can get on the field.”
Known as a dual-threat QB, Ruben has taken full advantage of his 4.53 speed, torching defenses for over 18 yards per carry. A move RB might be possible, though Ruben does not want schools to forget he can also pass the ball as well. “The past few games, my passing has improved a lot. I am completing 70% of my passes,” he says.
Lack of exposure is something that Ruben will take the blame for, “I didn’t do a good job of getting my name out. I didn’t go to any camps this summer.” He plans to send out some film to schools that a run a similar spread offense to what Saguaro runs; he points to UNLV as a school he will contact.
With a 3.6 GPA and a track record as a proven winner, Ruben could be a steal for the right program.
