Lavar Edwards says his parents want him to go to local favorite LSU. The Tigers are only one and half-hours from his home in New Orleans. "They really want me to stay close," Edwards said. "They want to come to my games and support me and it would be great to have them there. Also LSU is a great program. They are a winning team every year and have some of the best coaches in the country..."

Lavar Edwards the 6-foot-3, 290-pound three-star tight end/defensive end from Desire Street Academy in Baton Rouge, La., says he has 10 scholarship offers and has narrowed his choices to five favorites.

Edwards favors LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Florida and says all five have offered. "I'd love to go somewhere I'll have a chance to play and get a degree," Edwards said. "When my football career ends I want to have a degree."

He has already taken official visits to Tennessee (Oct. 27) and Oklahoma (Nov. 3). "I won't take any other visits until after our season is over," he said. "I do want to take all of them."

Edwards, Scout.com's No. 47 tight end, visited the Sooners last weekend for the Texas A&M game. "I really liked the game day atmosphere," he said. "People were everywhere and they were all having fun and tailgating. Everyone in Norman roots for Oklahoma and it's a great city. I like the small town atmosphere.

"I also really like the coaches at Oklahoma a lot," he said. "They are recruiting me for defensive end and they always have a great defense. Coach Bob Stoops is a great guy and he's also a great coach. He's coached some great players and they send lots of guys to the NFL."

As much as Edwards says he liked his experience at Oklahoma, he says the shear size of Tennessee was impressive. "The stadium fits about 107,000 people," he said. "That many people get really loud. Plus the game was pretty close (against South Carolina) so it was a lot more intense than the Oklahoma game.

"I also really liked Knoxville a lot," he said. "The scenery is really pretty and I like the mountains. It's a great family atmosphere there and I like how close the team is. They really are like one big family."

Edwards says his parents want him to go to local favorite LSU. The Tigers are only one and half-hours from his home in New Orleans. "They really want me to stay close," he said. "They want to come to my games and support me and it would be great to have them there.

"Also LSU is a great program," he said. "They are a winning team every year and have some of the best coaches in the country. They are really good and I think they'll win the national championship this year. They are the best team in the country."

While the Tigers are already a premiere program in college football, Edwards admits he's also been very impressed with the strides new coach Nick Saban has made at Alabama. "I really think he'll bring them back to being a premiere program in college football," he said. "Coach Saban is a great coach. He's real serious and tough, but he knows what he's doing and it's all the best for his players. They are better players because of him.

"I also really like the facilities at Alabama and it's a great football town."

Desire Street Academy has a 6-3 record, with Edwards scoring 12 touchdowns on over 400 yards receiving.

"I like to catch the ball," he said. "I've got good hands and go up and get the ball. I play real physical. On defense I can rush the passer really well.

"I need to get faster and lose some weight," he admitted. "At tight end I need to move better and be more agile."

Edwards says he can bench 315 pounds. He has a 27-inch vertical jump and runs the forty in 4.9.

Academics unreported.
