Cody Bruns the 5-foot-11, 170-pound four-star wide receiver from Prosser, Wash., has sparked his team to a perfect 9-0 record. Prosser High School opens the playoffs on Friday, Nov. 9 against Clarkston High School.
For the season, Bruns has over 1000 yards receiving and 19 touchdowns. "I run crisp routes and have good body control," Bruns said. "I can go up and catch the rock. That's my objective. I feel like I'm a technician on the field.
"Every receiver wants to improve their route-running because you never feel it's good enough," he admitted. "But I also want to work on my strength and be more physical."
Bruns, ranked the No. 34 wide receiver in the country by Scout.com, benches 260 pounds and squats 340. He says he runs a 4.65 forty and has a 34-inch vertical jump.
Growing up, Bruns always followed Washington and Washington State and the Huskies and Cougars continue to remain his two favorites. "It's really about 50/50 right now," he said. "They are both recruiting me the hardest and are both under three hours away. I like both the coaching staffs too.
"Washington State throws the ball a bit more, but Washington runs a spread offense too," he said. "Also, Washington State is in a smaller town and it's more of a college town. But Washington is in a great area and I'm looking forward to taking my visit there."
Bruns is visiting the Huskies in December and has already visited the Cougars (on Oct. 6 for the Arizona State game). "My visit to Washington State was great," he said. "It's like a brotherhood there. The coaches are great and I love the relationship they have with their players. Everyone knows each other on campus and everyone says 'hi' and seems to really care. It's just a really friendly place."
Despite their struggles on the field, Bruns say he believes that Washington is heading in the right direction. "I think coach Ty Willingham is doing a fabulous job," he said. "They are in every game they play and they really should have beaten USC this year.
"I like all the coaches at Washington because they seem like great people too," he said. "I've also gotten to know (Husky quarterback) Jake Locker a little bit and he's a good guy. Our team played his during my sophomore year and we've seen each other a few times since then.
"I also love the campus at Washington," he said. "The city is great and they have beautiful facilities."
The two in-state programs lead solidly over Boise State, Oregon State and Idaho and all five have offered. Bruns also has an offer from Eastern Washington and says that Oregon is also showing interest. "Oregon has been recruiting me a bit more recently," he said. "I think if they offer they'll definitely be in the mix. We've talked about me taking a visit there, so I may do that.
"I'd like to make my decision after my official visit to Washington," Bruns said. "I definitely plan to stay close and have my family nearby. I'd love to be able to come home whenever I want and have that support around me. I think it's really gonna just come down to that feeling I get."
He reports a 3.6 core GPA and a 1480 SAT.
