Bulldogs Land Central Cali' DE

Matt Akers

Fresno State's big weekend, which included a rout of Big 12 member Kansas State, got better on Sunday night when the Bulldogs landed a verbal from one of the top players in Central California...

Bakersfield (Calif.) Liberty defensive end Matt Akers, the top defensive lineman in Central California, was in attendance this past weekend for Fresno State's rout of Kansas State.

A day after the Bulldogs win, Akers told the Fresno State coaches that he would be joining them.

"Matt has committed to Fresno State as of today," said his dad, Jim.

The commitment from Akers gives the Bulldogs one of the best defensive end tandems of any program in the West, with Akers joining Van Nuys (Calif.) Birmingham's Malik Jackson as pass-rushers of the future for Fresno State.

Akers was supposed to take an official visit to Fresno this past weekend, but that was rescheduled to December 7th.

The three-star prospect is one of the top defensive players in Central California, and he's the top defensive lineman in the region. In 2007, Akers had 75 tackles and 15 sacks, recording a sack in every game but one for Liberty, who lost to Fresno Edison in the Central Section quarterfinals last weekend.
