Devin Smith, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound three-star cornerback from Coppell, Texas, finished his senior season with 40 tackles and five interceptions (three returned for scores). On offense he had 22 catches for 470 yards and five touchdowns. His team finished the season with a 7-3 record.
Smith, ranked as cornerback No. 81 by Scout.com, admits to now favoring Iowa slightly over Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Louisville. With 11 offers, he has scholarships from all of his favorites.
"I'm really interested in getting a feel for the location and facilities of all of these schools," he said. "I want to learn more about their academics too."
Smith takes his first official visit to Iowa on Dec. 1. "They are recruiting me the hardest," Smith said of the Hawkeyes. "I like coach (defensive coordinator) Norm Parker and they've been recruiting me hard for a while. We talk all the time and he says that I'd be able to come in and play early. He said they may also try and use me on offense too.
"Iowa struggled this year, but they had a lot of injuries so that probably contributed to it."
On Dec. 8, Smith will be taking an official visit to Wisconsin. "They have a great defense and I tried to watch a lot of their games this year to see what they are like," he said. "They play a lot of freshman and I think I'd be able to play early there."
He says he plans on taking all five of his visits. "I'd like to visit Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Louisville too if I have time," he said. "Oklahoma State has really impressed me the most this year. They played hard all year and are still getting better and better."
Smith reports a 3.6 core GPA and a 1450 SAT.
