The Western Michigan Broncos scored a big commitment over the Thanksgiving holiday as one of the midwest’s top specialists, Grand Haven kicker John Potter decided he wanted to play his college ball in Kalamazoo. Scout.com caught up with him and got all the reasoning behind his decision.
Grand Haven kicker
John Potter
has committed to
Western Michigan
. The 6’2, 190-lb Potter was receiving interest from
Notre Dame
,
Michigan
,
Michigan State
and
Grand Valley State
, but the Broncos were the only ones to offer and were validated with a verbal.
“I talked to the special teams coach, Coach Tabor, he came up to my school and talked to me during lunch and then he came and talked to my parents. Then, after sitting down with my family over Thanksgiving break, I decided it was the best decision for me.”
Of his 33 kickoffs this past season, Potter put 22 in the end zone. He was seven of eight on field goals, including kicks of 50, 45 and two from 42 yards. He also started at strong safety and saw time as a wide receiver (although the Broncos will use him purely as a kicker).
Although he previously had reported he may wait to see if other schools would offer, his plans changed after heading down to Kalamazoo.
“My interest in Western had been building and building since they offered. I went down there and saw their business program and their campus and I really liked it."
Although he is a top notch student, Potter says there are no plans for him to graduate early and enroll at WMU second semester. He is however, very happy to have this burden off his shoulders.
"It feels great actually," he reported, "I know what's going to happen, I don't have to fill out any more applications and I have my mom off my back!"
