Torn between two

Torn between two

Gerald Harris (TE, Navarro College, TX) - Rebel head coach, Houston Nutt, flew from New York where he had attended the Heisman presentation to see one of his top juco targets.

"Coach Nutt flew out here tonight," added the very well spoken Gerald Harris who is expected to graduate next week. "My parents drove over here this afternoon so they could meet him. Coach Nutt is just as excited about Ole Miss as I am. He said my scholarship is there, and that he is going to stay in contact with me and let me decide between them and Miami."

What questions did Gerald have for the newly hired Rebel head coach?

"Mostly my mother asked all of the questions and I just listened. I asked Coach Nutt my personal questions when it was just me and him in the car. We talked about a lot of things and then we went up to my apartment to meet my parents. She asked him about their plans for me if I got hurt, how strong of an academic school Ole Miss is, and I asked him about their plans for me next year. I think our meeting went great, and I know my family liked him a lot. Between coaches Nutt and Shannon, it is going to be a pretty hard decision."

Has the Harris family had a chance to meet Coach Shannon?

"Coach Shannon also came and met me and my family after our game yesterday. We basically talked about the same things. My family asked him the same questions they asked Coach Nutt. What are they going to do if I get hurt, questions about their academic support staff, and my questions were the same too. I wanted to know about their plans for me at Miami, what they expect from me, and what do I get in return, as far as my relationship with them on and off of the field, and the coaching I am going to get. "

What were Miami's plans for Gerald?

"Miami wants to bring me in and compete for a starting spot with the rest of their TE's that are there now. They want to get my weight up and speed down, of course, and get me very involved in their offense and be the next great TE to come out of their program. I am going to make things happen on the field, if I am provided the tools I need, so I am not very worried about that. I just want to know what they can offer me and my career later on in life and the alumni networking they can introduce me too."

And what are Ole Miss' plans?

"Coach Nutt brings a lot of energy. He seemed excited to just come and see me. Their plan for me is for me to be the conferences next great TE and be a leader for a new team that he is bringing in for his new coaching staff. He just wants me to be a good role model for future recruits. I asked Coach Nutt what his plans are for me outside of football, and he said that Ole Miss had a alumni base that has a lot of contacts, which I already knew that. He told me that they provide a lot of academic support and that they have one of the best academic support staffs in the country. They put a lot of money into it. Coach Nutt told me that he was going to make sure I did well in the class room as well as on the field, and my parents were pretty happy to hear that. They just expect great things from me."

Gerald will visit Miami this weekend but has another stop he will make.

"I am going to UConn on Wednesday and Thursday."

Any more visits on tap before he makes a decision?

"I can not tell you for sure if I am going to take anymore visits. I know I am going to UConn and then Miami this weekend. I will come back from Miami and consult with my family about how my trip went to Miami, and my experience to Ole Miss, and we will probably talk about my experience at UConn. They are no small fry either. But I think it will come down to either Miami or Ole Miss. I have always wanted to go to Miami since I was a little kid and Ole Miss felt like home while I was on my visit there. I have enjoyed getting to know coach Nutt, and I look forward to developing a better relationship with him and his staff."

Gerald is expected to graduate this month and will sign on the early signing period which starts on December 19th.
