"About
1:15 today I walked into Coach Nutt's office with my Uncle Ricky Green,"
stated the 6' 2 1/2", 315 pound center from N' West CC, Brandon Green. "He
told me that he was looking for a center, and I told him I was aware of that.
He said that he understood that I was committed to Memphis, and I said yes sir,
but I want to come play for you. Coach Nutt told me that he wanted to take a snap
from me, so we went to the field and he took a snap from me. He told me that he
had seen all he needed to see. He asked me if I were to offer you, would you take
it, and I told him I would take it on the spot. He shook my hands and said congrats,
you are my first commitment as the new Rebel head coach. We called their new offensive
line coach, Mike Markuson, to let him know that I just committed. We talked for
a little while and hung up."
Did Green inform the Memphis staff about
his decision?
"Yes sir, they were just real business like about
it. They told me that they understood, wished me the best, and thanked me for
giving them time to find another center."
Who else was involved in
Green's recruitment?
"I had offers from Memphis, Southern Mississippi,
Arkansas State, and Ole Miss was the only SEC school who offered me. That is who
I was waiting on. I have been wanting to play for Ole Miss since I was a little
kid and now I have the opportunity to fulfill my life time dream. I just want
to help Coach Nutt win his first championship at Ole Miss."
The Southaven
product transferred to N' West CC in '06 and has started every game during his
two year stint for the Rangers.
"I started out at center when I came
to N' West CC and played center, guard, and tackle last year. This year I started
all ten games at center."
Any awards?
"Me, Daniel Thomas,
and Patrick Trahan all earned 1st Team All-Region, State, and I earned 1st Team
All-American and 1st Team Academic All-American by JC Gridwire as well."
Why
is Green better suited for center than tackle or guard?
"I have
to say I am able to do many things to control the game from center. I call the
other fronts, call out the blitzes, and the protection coverages. I am smart enough
to recognize what we need to be in, and I am aggressive but in control enough
to take care of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd levels. My toughness and my will to win
also helps too."
Brandon will graduate in December and is expected
to sign with the Rebels on December 19th.
