Matthew Gordon had to do a lot of thinking. People around him thought they knew what was on his mind…
SEC Dream Coming True For Gordon?
Matthew Gordon Profile This week Matthew Gordon sat down and began to contemplate his future and his college destination. While he was considering his options, another offer came his way. "It's been a crazy couple of days," said Matthew. "I was thinking about where I was going to go and then Mississippi State came in with this offer. I am going down there tomorrow (Wednesday) to look at the campus and meet the coaches." For Matthew the offer came as a very welcomed surprise. "Coach Harbison called Coach Yancey and told him that he wanted to meet with me and him," said Gordon. "I met with him and they offered me. He told me that Coach Croom wants me on offense as a receiver and that Coach Harbison wants me on defense as a safety. They said they really like my film and they think I am a player." Gordon and his family will attend the Bulldog first bowl game practice today and it will be a new experience for him. "I have never been to Mississippi State," said Matthew. "I went when I was a little kid, but I don't remember it. I was supposed to go their this summer for their camp, but I was hurt. I hate that happened right about now. I am looking forward to getting over there. I am real excited. This is the type of offer I have always wanted. I have dreamed of playing in the SEC since I was a little kid. Now I have the opportunity. I just need to see if it's a good fit for me, but right now it's sounding like it is." Mississippi State safties coach Charlie Harbison has kept a watchful eye on Matthew as he has progressed this season. "Coach Harbison has been to practice to watch Bo (Walters) and I know he had been keeping an eye on me," said Gordon. "I wouldn't say I was a late bloomer, but I didn't have my breakout year until this year. I think that had a lot to do with me getting on offense, so I could show more of what I can do. The first part of the year I think I caught Coach Harbison's attention and after that I just kept trying to keep it up and playing hard." Teammate Bo Walters made his commitment to Mississippi State several months ago. Bo has been supportive of Matthew and has not been shy about offering some friendly advice about his thoughts on Matthew's pending decision. "Bo has had nothing but good things to say about it," said Matthew. "He thinks the world of Coach Croom, Coach Harbison and the rest of the people down there. He said that I will fall in love with the campus and the facilities. He told me that he didn't want to put any pressure on me and make me feel like I have to go there because he is going there. I respect what he has to say, but I need to be sure it's the best fit for me." Gordon's enthusiasm about the newest scholarship offer may only be surpassed by the excitement of his parents. "They were real excited," said Matthew. "I think they both still have a grin on their faces from ear to ear. They are very excited for me." Followers of Alabama High School football are aware that a player from Briarwood Christian will have a solid football foundation thanks in large part to the coaching of Head Coach Fred Yancey. "Coach Yancey was about as happy as I was," said Matthew. "I think I can play big time football, but I haven't had the offers to really show it. Coach Yancey has been telling me to keep my head up and keeping playing hard. He said that if I did that, good things would happen for me. When the offer came he told me that it was a great opportunity, but that I need to be sure it's the right place for me. He always told me that I needed to go to the place that wants me and he feels that Mississippi State wants me. Coach Yancey has been a great coach and person. He has given me great advice and encouragement. I think highly of what he has to say and to hear him say that about Mississippi State makes me like them that much more." In addition to Mississippi State, Matthew holds scholarship offers from Air Force, Furman and Sanford.
