Marlton, N.J., signal caller Demetrius Richardson had half a dozen scholarship offers to choose from, but in the end his preference to play the quarterback position really took hold of his recruiting. This weekend he took an official visit to West Point and by the time Sunday evening hit, he was a part of the Army program.

Demetrius Richardson, a 6-foot-2, 213-pound quarterback from Cherokee High School gave a verbal commitment to Army on Sunday to play quarterback for the Golden Knights. While staying at his position of preference wasn’t the only reason for the commitment, it did play a large role in his decision.

“I gave them my commitment on Sunday and really didn’t want to put it out there, but the story got run early without me knowing it by other sites, so I just went ahead and made it public then,” Richardson explained. “After visiting West Point there was no reason not to commit to Army to be honest with you. I just enjoyed myself a lot out there and love what the program is all about.”

“First and foremost, the degree that I get from West Point will put me in a great position for the future where I will definitely have a leg up on other people because it doesn’t get any better then the education I will have,” Richardson added. “I also like the discipline of a military background and am fully prepared for the commitment I will need to make if I do not go to the NFL. They also play big time football and are an independent, so I will get to go up against great programs like Notre Dame. Finally, I just liked that they were honest and up front with me at all times. I want to help them turn around the program after I go to Prep for a year.”

Richardson also had an offer from Connecticut who he was looking at hard, however the Huskies wanted him to play linebacker which is not the direction he was looking to go in.
