Beaumont (Texas) West Brook defensive back Mike Williams has lived in Texas his whole life, but a trip up to Boise State changed where his address will be for the next four years. “I took my official visit there the weekend before last and I committed there on Saturday,” said Williams. So what made the Lone Star State native decide to head up to the land of the blue turf? “Actually, believe it or not, when I went up there, it felt like Beaumont to me,” said Williams. “It felt like home. I liked the snow. It’s a little colder, but I loved it. The players, I got to interact with them and ask them a lot of questions and fit in real well. I like the atmosphere there. The academics, they looked real good to me. It seemed like a home run to me.” Williams was being recruited by Jeff Choate, the Broncos special teams and running backs coach, and he’ll get a chance to coach Williams specifically. “I’m going to come in and play cornerback but I’ll also be returning kicks. There is a good chance I can play as a true freshman. I know I’ll have a chance to come in and compete. I believe I can,” said Williams. Williams said the Broncos rise as a legitimate name nationally played a role in his decision. “It definitely stood out to me. When they beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, beating Oklahoma proves they can beat anyone,” said Williams. “They’re winning the WAC and they’re on the map because of the Fiesta Bowl. And despite the distance, Williams said that it wouldn’t be a detriment. “Being a Texas kid, staying in Texas is a big thing, so while it might be tough being away from home, Boise felt like home. I don’t see myself getting homesick,” said Williams. A one-time commit to Baylor, Williams was also hearing from Florida and Iowa, and both schools were planning to bring him in for a visit, but he’s not going to take them. “I’m solidly committed to Boise State,” said Williams. Houston, Utah, UTEP and Mississippi State also offered the three-star cornerback, who’s ranked #34 nationally by Scout.com. |
