Just a few hours after we first reported that B.R. Holbrook, the quarterback from Newhall (Calif.) Hart, could be committing to New Mexico, his father Gary called to say that he did, in fact, pull the trigger and give the Lobos a verbal pledge.
We caught up with Holbrook to find out the reason behind the commitment.
"The coaches were the biggest part," said Holbrook. "I'll be in good hands with them. I called Coach (Dave) Baldwin, but I ended up talking to the whole staff. Coach Baldwin is the biggest reason why I picked them."
Baldwin has a long history of offensive experience, and he's plenty familiar with Holbrook, and the Hart program, having coached at CS Northridge before the Matadors dropped their program.
In Holbrook, the Lobos are getting one of the sleeper prospects from the West. He comes from one of the premier passing programs in the country, a school that had two of its alums start NFL games last weekend in Kyle Boller (Ravens) and Matt Moore (Panthers).
Interestingly, Boller and Moore started only one year at quarterback for Hart before going to college, and were starting safeties for the Indians. Holbrook spent only one season as a starter for Hart, he too having played in the Indian secondary until this point.
During the 2007 season, Holbrook threw for 2,656 yards and 25 touchdown passes to only six interceptions. He rushed for 739 yards and eight touchdowns during a 12-1-1 season for the Indians.
