Escondido (Calif.) Valley Center fullback/defensive lineman Jason Klingerman (6-2, 270) gave an early commitment to Colorado State and figured recruiting would be done.
Then came the coaching change at Colorado State, where longtime Rams leader Sonny Lubick was replaced by former Rams player Steve Fairchild.
So Klingerman has had his recruitment get stirred.
“It definitely has gotten complicated,” said Klingerman. “I’m still considering Colorado State but looking at my other options.”
Those options include offers from San Diego State and Utah State and recruitments from Boise State, UNLV and BYU.
“I’d say I’m open and I’m still looking around,” said Klingerman. “The two main positions I’m being recruited at are defensive tackle and fullback.”
Klingerman visited Fort Collins when the Rams hosted California back in September, and that was his lone visit before taking a trip to hometown San Diego State.
“The first week we’re back from the dead period, I’m going to Utah State. San Diego State is recruiting me as a defensive tackle, Utah State is recruiting me as a tight end and fullback and Colorado State, I’m not sure what position Coach Fairchild is going to recruit me at.”
As for the other three schools showing interest in Klingerman, he said the contact hasn’t been as strong as of late.
“I would like to take a visit up to BYU,” said Klingerman. “Boise State and UNLV, they were recruiting me at strictly tight end. But I don’t feel like its my natural position, I think that is either tackle or fullback. So I’m not sure what’s happening with Boise State and UNLV. I’ve been talking with BYU, and if they recruit me, it would be as a fullback.”
Klingerman said that San Diego State’s proximity to his home is a plus.
“My parents would like me to stay home and San Diego is a great place,” said Klingerman. “I definitely have to look at where I want to be the next four years. San Diego State, being located where it is, is pretty good.”
At this point, Klingerman said he would be making his choice after his next two visits.
“I want to make it at least at the end of January,” said Klingerman. “Right now, though, things are up in the air.”
Klingerman and his Valley Center teammates won the CIF-San Diego Section D-III title in 2007.
