Who will be South Panola's next great?

David Conner (LB, Batesville, MS) - It is always hard to get recognition as a non-senior on a star studded team like South Panola, but the Tiger's star linebacker did just that.

"Everyone knows about Tig (Barksdale), Bud (Barksdale), Terrance (Pope), and those guys, but let me tell you, David (Conner) is what makes our defense go," added the always upfront head coach, Lance Pogue. "He is just so relentless. Whether you want him to get after the QB, drop him in coverage, or go plug a hole. The kid just has a nose for the ball. He is your classic sideline to sideline player. David is without a doubt a Dandy Dozen type player for our state. He will be next year's Tig for us."

David turned in a stellar junior campaign by helping the Tigers to a 15-0 record and Class 5A state championship. He led the team in total tackles (97), tackles for losses (18), sacks (14), and forced fumbles (3).

David was rewarded by being one of three juniors named to the 1st Team All-State squad by the Jackson Clarion Ledger.

How does Conner feel about his junior campaign?

"It feels good," added David Conner. "I just hope we can go back and do the same thing next year, but it feels lovely to go back and do it again."

Conner plays outside linebacker for South Panola but expects to move to strong safety on the next level.

"I just like to try and make plays. I think safety will be my best spot, really. I can cover pretty good. I think I am pretty good at coming down on the ball and coming up on the ball. I think safety would be a pretty good spot for me, something like a Dog safety. Somebody who gets after the passer, disrupts the running game, and drops back in coverages."

This offseason, Conner is looking to improve on a few things.

"I want to get even faster and stronger and become the team leader. I want to show the young guys how hard you have to work to win like we do at South Panola. We want to continue to keep the tradition going. I am going to try and work real hard this offseason because I know the coaches are going to lean on me next year so I am going to work harder than ever before. I want to do what Tig (Darius Barksdale) and (Chris) Strong did."

The 5' 11", 188 pounder has started to hear from a couple of SEC schools.

"LSU is really the main one. They have been recruiting me pretty hard, and I have been getting a couple of things from Ole Miss lately."

Who are the colleges who have caught Conner's eye so far?

"Alabama, Florida, Penn State, Florida State, LSU, and Ole Miss."
