Los Gatos (Calif.) running back Nick Kalpin was one of the top ball-carriers in California this year and in college, he'll help put the "run" in run-and-shoot, as he committed to play for Jerry Glanville, Mouse Davis and Portland State this past weekend.
"Nick committed to Portland State," said his mother, Adrienne. "We're very happy & excited for the opportunity for him. Nick has a pretty nice opportunity and I think sooner than later."
The coaching staff that Portland State has is one of the more experienced staffs you'll see at the college level, and that stood out to them.
"We really like the coaching staff," she said. "They're a great group of young guys and of course Coach Glanville is a super nice guy.
Coach Glanville and Coach Davis are really making changes up there."
The PSU staff has been infusing the program with more talent and have hit the high school circles hard.
"They are bringing 25 freshman into the program. Coach Glanville likes Nick's instincts & vision," she said.
Also standing out to them was the support from the community.
"The town of Portland just loves Coach Glanville. Everywhere we went when we mentioned our boys were being recruited, everyone had great things to say about him and the school."
Kalpin was named by GoldenStatePreps.com as the Northern California Offensive Player of the Year. His memorable senior campaign saw him rush for 2,553 yards and score 41 touchdowns.
