One of the grittiest and most underrated players we saw last fall was Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure linebacker Loren Powers.
The heart and soul of the Seraphs defense, the 6-3, 211-pound Powers was a major reason why St. Bonaventure won the California D-III state title.
For reasons unknown, Powers still doesn't have an offer, but it appears that his recruitment is starting to take off.
"Loren currently has Washington State very interested with a recruiter visiting last Tuesday," said St. Bonaventure recruiting coordinator Roger Sonsini. "Washington State likes Loren’s size, speed and toughness. They are also very impressed with his ability to always be where the ball is on the field."
What the Cougar staff has seen is what many opponents saw this fall from Powers. He was always around the ball and was at his best in the big game, forcing a fumble and recording a sack in the state championship win over Modesto Central Catholic.
And Washington State isn't the only school getting in on Powers.
"Nevada has interest in Loren and will look seriously at him as an inside linebacker," said Sonsini. "Fresno State called today and asked if Loren has accepted any offers and when told there were no firm offers, only high interest, they requested film of Loren."
Sonsini said things could pick up with both Powers and teammate Ryan Medina with the Bulldogs.
It is very likely that Loren and Ryan may visit Fresno State quite soon," said Sonsini.
With Ryan Panapa sidelined for most of the year with a broken foot, Powers anchored the St. Bonaventure defense, leading the team with 103 tackles and four sacks. He was a First Team all-County, First Team all-CIF and second team all-Southern California pick in 2007.
