Oxnard (Calif.) Santa Clara tight end Randi Vines (6-4, 220) is one of the top uncommitted prospects in the West, and after having a trio of offers early in the process, those schools have filled their spots, so Vines is a man without a school.
“Right now, all the teams recruiting me kind of backed off,” said Vines. “I switched over to quarterback to help my team out and it seemed like interest dropped.”
At one point, Vines had offers from Wake Forest, San Diego State and Utah, but as each school filled spots before Vines was ready to commit, he soon found himself on the outside looking in. But he’s hoping things pick up again.
“We’ve talked with Idaho and UTEP and they want some film on him,” said Santa Clara athletic director Mike Schabert. “We’re still hopeful.”
Vines said that Nevada and Sacramento State have also shown some recent interest in him and he’s trying to keep his goal of playing D-I football alive.
“I took an official visit to Fresno State and the visit was cool,” said Vines. “They talked about an offer but they were looking at a local kid who committed.”
So Vines continues to be optimistic.
“I’m honestly open to anything at this point,” said Vines. “If things didn’t work out, I’d go to Ventura College for a year.”
Vines is a full qualifier, carrying a 3.5 GPA and scoring an 850 on the two-part SAT he took.
During the 2007 season, Vines led Santa Clara to their first CIF title in 42 years. Defensively, he had 70 tackles with 10 sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Offensively, he was 30-for-54 for 632 yards with eight touchdowns.
