The Scout.com 2008 All-America Team is led by the Scout.com National Player of Year, quarterback Terrelle Pryor. Pryor, from Jeannette (Pa.) High School, led his Jayhawaks to a 16-0 record and AA State Championship. Pryor had 3,788 yards of total offense. That broke down to 1,899 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns and 1,889 yards passing and 23 touchdowns. He finished his career with 8,499 total yards of offense.
“I would like to thank Scout.com for this honor,” said Terrelle Pryor. “I would also like to thank my coaches and teammates.”
Pryor, 6-6 and 220 pounds, is also the nation’s top prospect. He has narrowed things down to Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, and Oregon. Pryor has already visited the Buckeyes and Wolverines. He may not sign with anyone on Wednesday, National Signing Day, so he can make another official visit or two.
“I have thought he has been the top prospect for two years now,” said Bob Lichtenfels of Scout.com. “I was slightly apprehensive of his level of competition but at the U.S. Amry All-American Bowl he proved to me and any other doubters that he was by far the nation’s top player. On the biggest stage of high school football he took the game over. It was Terrelle Pryor and everybody else.”
Pryor beat out running backs Milton Knox (Van Nuys, Calif.) and Justin Johnson (Gilmer, Texas), linebacker Arthur Brown (Wichita, Ka.), and wide receiver Julio Jones (Foley, Ala.). Brown, Jones and Johnson all made the Scout.com First Team. Other members of the first team are running back Darrell Scott (Ventura, Calif.), wide receivers A.J. Green (Summerville, S.C.) and DeAndre Brown (Ocean Springs, Miss.) and tight end Kyle Rudolph (Cincinnati, Ohio).
“With all of the wide receivers in the south, it is impossible to go wrong with any of them,” said Miller Safrit of Scout.com. “They are all tall, fast, have soft hands, and know what to do with the ball after the catch. These three are easily some of the best receivers I have seen in my time at Scout.com.”
Up front are offensive tackles Tyron Smith (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Mike Adams (Dublin, Ohio), guards Josh Jenkins (Parkersburg, W.V.) and Baker Steinkuhler (Lincoln, Ne.) and center Michael Brewster (Orlando, Fla.).
“It's a great year for offensive linemen and this year's Scout.com All-American front is anchored by two sterling tackles: Tyron Smith and Mike Adams. Smith is a lean 267 pounds who comes equipped with great feet and freakish athleticism for a big man. Adams moves exceptionally well and has good lateral mobility. Manning the guard spots are Josh Jenkins and Baker Steinkuhlker. Jenkins shows superior agility and is great at using his hands inside to control and seal defenders. Steinkuhler is an amazing drive blocker who plays with defensive athleticism. Anchoring the line is center Mike Brewster, another athletic specimen who at 6-5, 300 pounds, sets up great in pass protection and shows that relentless, scrappy attitude that makes him so tough to beat.”
Defensive ends Daquan Bowers (Bamberg, S.C.) and R.J. Washington (Keller, Texas) and tackles Marcus Forston (Miami, Fla.) and Omar Hunter (Buford, Ga.) lead a stellar defensive unit. The back seven consists of linebackers Brown, Nigel Bradham (Crawfordville, Fla.) and Etienne Sabino (Miami, Fla.), safeties Will Hill (Jersey City, N.J.) and Rahim Moore (Los Angeles, Calif.) and cornerbacks Patrick Johnson (Pompano Beach, Fla.) and Aaron Williams (Austin, Texas).
Other Scout.com National Players of the Year have been quarterbacks Ryan Perrilloux, and Chris Leak, running back Chris Wells, wide receiver/cornerback Ted Ginn, Jr. and defensive end Everson Griffen.
