The linebacker prospect from Newhall (Calif.) Hart, Patrick Larimore, who is verbally committed to UCLA, talked about taking official visit to the campus in January, how he's excited not only about the defensive coaching staff, but the hiring of Norm Chow, and more...

Newhall (Calif.) Hart linebacker Patrick Larimore didn’t get to take his official visit in December with the rest of UCLA’s commits, but he finally was able to take it in January.

“It was a pretty awesome trip,” said Larimore. “My host was Steve Sloan and I met a lot more of the players this time. I was getting to talk with some of the players one-on-one,” said Larimore. “Steve took me around campus and to the dorms. I was pretty excited about it.”

Larimore said much of his time was spent meeting with the new UCLA coach, Rick Neuheisel, as well as returning linebackers coach, Chuck Bullough.

“We were going over film, going over the defense, getting to know it better. UCLA just has some great coaches. Coach Bullough says he plays the best three linebackers and he thinks I can play a couple spots. I just want to play, either spot, it doesn’t matter to me,” said Larimore.

Larimore knew that Bullough was a candidate for a job on the staff of Northwestern, but after Bullough turned it down, Larimore said he was relieved. “He told me he’s staying,” said Larimore. “He came over to my house for dinner and he was talking to my family about how he is happy to be there. The whole defensive staff is set up.”

After Larimore’s visit, UCLA hired Norm Chow to be the offensive coordinator. The first person to tell him the news was Nick Crissman. “I was pretty geeked when Nick told me. He’s giddy. I’m giddy and I’m a linebacker,” said Larimore. “I think that’s a perfect hire. It’s a great choice for offensive coordinator. I think he’s going to ramp up the offense. It’s definitely a big improvement.”

Larimore said the UCLA coaching staff is as strong as any he’s seen, and he’s thrilled to have the chance to play for them. “It started shaping up when we had the really great defensive staff stay,” said Larimore. “It’s hard to keep coaches, but then they hired them back so now the defensive staff is solid and good. And who has a better resume than Norm Chow? Coach Neuheisel has done really well.”

Larimore said he gets the impression that the recruiting class will stay intact, and he’s doing his part to keep guys on board.

“I keep regular contact with Milton (Knox) and Donovan (Carter),” said Larimore. “I think we’ll be fine. This is going to be a really good class.”
