The Daily Recruiting Word
HEADLINE STORY: * 7-3, 255 pound center Shagari Alleyne , the 25th ranked prospect in the nation according to Student Sports, has committed to Rutgers over Kentucky. The New York (N.Y.) Rice big man, who averaged 15 points and eight rebounds last season, had taken trips to Rutgers, Pepperdine, St. John's, Louisville and Kentucky. He was also offered by UConn. Basketball Commitments: * Standout guard Will Blalock of Fitchburg (Mass.) Notre Dame, has pledged the Iowa State Cyclones over George Washington. The 6-0, 165 pounder averaged 20 points per game as a junior. * Forward Anthony Tucker of Raleigh (N.C.) Enloe, committed to the Texas Longhorns. The 6-5, 240 pounder, who averaged 25 points and 17 rebounds as a junior, also looked at Clemson, West Virginia, Richmond and UNC-Greensboro. Football Commitments: * The Colorado Buffaloes picked up their 17th known verbal from Houston (Texas) Westbury offensive lineman Edwin Harrison . The 6-3, 300 pounder was one of the top OLs at the Nike Camp in Texas and chose the Buffs over offers from Northwestern and Missouri. * 6-2, 220 pound linebacker Kyle Wagner is the first commitment for the Northwestern Wildcats in the Class of 2003. Wagner earned Class 2A All-State 2nd Team honors last fall as a junior at Jacksonville (Fla.) Bolles, racking up 141 tackles and two interceptions. * Another Jacksonville area standout committed this weekend, as First Coast High's Devin Blake chose Tulane. The 5-10, 175 pound defensive back also considered Wake Forest and Central Florida. Football Recruiting News: * The biggest news this weekend perhaps wasn't a commitment but instead a decommitment, as one of the South's top offensive line prospects, 6-4, 270 pound Jarrod Britt of Powder Springs (Ga.) McEachern, has backed off from his commitment to Clemson and is now considering other schools, namely South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Britt has at least 33 scholarship offers by his account, and for good reason. He was one of the top offensive linemen in attendance at the Nike Camp in Georgia this spring, where he ran a 5.22 in the 40, a 4.77 shuttle, benched 31 reps and posted a 30-inch vertical jump. * "My top two are Ohio State and Miami, and I think Miami's recruiting me a little bit harder right now," outstanding defensive lineman David Patterson told Student Sports. Patterson has already tripped to Miami (Oct. 12th) and his senior season is complete as his Warrensville Heights (Ohio) team went 6-4 and missed the playoffs. "I'll visit Ohio State either in January or for the Michigan game. Florida wants me to visit Dec. 13th, but that hasn't been confirmed. I'm pretty sure I'll visit Maryland Dec. 6th and I'll probably visit Michigan and maybe Boston College," the 6-3, 265 pounder says about the rest of his official visits. * Hot 100 offensive lineman Martin O'Donnell out of Downers Grove (Ill.) South has set three of his five official visits. "I have Illinois for Dec 6th, Nebraska for Dec. 13th and Stanford for Jan. 10th," says the 6-4, 275 pounder. "My final two visits will be to either Oregon, Penn State or Iowa." All of O'Donnell's favorites have offered, but he is yet to complete his application for Stanford at this point.
