While many players from Dunbar High School are pulling in lots of national recognition, Gary Onuekwusi is trying to build a name for himself right now. The productive defensive player showed last season that he can make things happen on the field and is now waiting for his opportunity this summer to show coaches in person what he can do.

Gary Onuekwusi, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound outside linebacker from Dunbar High School in Baltimore, Md., may not be a household name, but he’s working hard to become one after a junior season where he racked up 102 tackles, six forced fumbles, eight sacks and two interceptions.

“Right now I hear from Syracuse, James Madison and Maryland,” Onuekwusi stated. “I have been to Maryland plenty of times and went to their junior day this weekend which was great. They really act like a family there and the coaches made a great impression. The facilities are top of the line and I also like that it makes me comfortable there because they are so close to home.”

“I talked to Coach Randy Trivers from Syracuse recently and he asked me to get up to camp and send him a highlight film,” Onuekwusi said. “They are a good school in terms of academics and from what I was told you get a lot of individual attention in the classroom. At this point I just want to learn more about them.”

Onuekwusi reports a 2.5 core GPA.
