San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine Prep quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels did damage with his arm and his legs in 2007 and he's hoping to continue to make his presence known with college coaches during the spring...

San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine Prep quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels (6-1.5, 205) had a strong junior campaign, leading the Bells to the WCAL title with a junior-laden squad.

Now Carta-Samuels is hoping that schools will take notice of his exploits.

“I’ve been getting a lot of mail from California, UCLA, NC State, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Arizona State and Washington State,” said Carta-Samuels. “Those are the ones sending the most.”

Carta-Samuels, a Bay Area native, though, said since he was a kid, Cal has been the program he grew up rooting for.

“Since I was little, Cal has been my favorite,” said Carta-Samuels. “They’re a school that I would love to be a part of. Coach (Jeff) Tedford is an amazing person and Cal is close to home. I’ve been camping there since I was in eighth grade."

He also camped at UCLA last summer and has been keeping an eye on them.

"I went to the UCLA camp last year, and even though the coaching staff was replaced, that is something I desired to be a part of. I’d love to join that offense and I know of all the great quarterbacks that Coach (Norm) Chow has worked with. But they also recruited three quarterbacks. So we’ll see what goes on.”

Aside from the two California UC schools, Oregon is another school that Carta-Samuels has interest in.

“UCLA and Cal first got interested in us (at Bellarmine Prep) and when Michael Clay (his teammate and linebacker for Bellarmine) got MVP at the Nike Camp, Oregon came down,” said Carta-Samuels.

But Carta-Samuels said he’s open to anyone.

“If I was to hit my dream school of California or UCLA, I’d make my decision then,” said Carta-Samuels. “But I’m hoping to hit the east coast too for some schools. I want to start narrowing it down right away. I want someone to see my film and see that I could play. My dad played college football as well. I want to go somewhere that they want me really bad. If that means committing in three months or committing next fall, I’m completely open to this process.”

Carta-Samuels said several factors will play a role in his decision.

“Obviously, I’ll factor in the academics in a school,” said Carta-Samuels. “And then the coaches and the football teams record.”

Carta-Samuels works out with Pro Sports USA, and a few of the players he’s worked out with have gone on to the Pac-10.

“I know Anthony Miller, who’s going to Cal and Kiko Alonso, who’s going to Oregon and also Steve Sloan who’s at UCLA,” said Carta-Samuels. “So we’ve talked a lot about the recruiting process.”

Carta-Samuels knows that his height could be an obstacle, but he showed this fall the ability to be crafty in the pocket.

“I’m only 6-1, so we’re going to be running and making plays,” said Carta-Samuels. “Sure, I’d like to be 6-3, but I’m like 6-1.5. But I’m the most confident player in the world, when I’m off running.”

This spring, Carta-Samuels will be at the New Level/Scout Pass Camp in Las Vegas and the Combine in the Bay Area.

“I’m excited about those, showing what I can do,” said Carta-Samuels. “Me and my teammates want to maximize our exposure.”

Carta-Samuels threw for 1,247 yards and nine touchdowns while running for 11 touchdowns en route to all-WCAL honors.

Academically, Carta-Samuels has a 3.0 GPA and will take the SAT this spring.
