For one, he
still is trying to figure out which position he is going to play on the next level.
And two, Lawrence is still looking for a place to call home.
So
just which position does the 6' 2", 205 pounder prefer to play?
"Right
now, it does not matter. I could play QB, SS, and some of them are even talking
about me playing outside linebacker," added the always well mannered Cameron
Lawrence. "It depends on my weight. I have put on 17 pounds in the last
year alone. I went from 188 to 205 now. I have worked hard at maintaining my (4.6)
speed, while adding weight, and so far I have done that."
Lawrence
was named the MVP at the Scout.com combine in New Orleans last Spring,
as only a sophomore. But that does not necessarily mean that Lawrence thinks that
is his best position.
"I really do not know right now. The coaches
tell me the same thing. They do not know which side of the ball I am better at,
and they would know better than me. I like both sides of the ball equally, really.
I just want to play where ever I can get on the field the quickest."
The
Magnolia Heights product rushed for over 1, 300 yards and passed for over 900
and totaled 22 TD's as a junior. He also amassed 110 tackles, 2 sacks, and 4 interceptions.
Now you can see the difficulty in predicting the position he will land at on the
next level. Cameron was named All-State at DB as a sophomore and was also named
All-Conference at both QB and DB
"Oklahoma State offered me as a QB,
and MSU wants me to play safety. Duke just wants to get me up there as an athlete.
Those are the three schools who have offered me so far. Ole Miss, Alabama, Vandy,
USM, and Nebraska are also showing me alot of interest. Memphis too."
Lawrence
has begun to build relationships with several of the coaches who are recruiting
him.
"I talk to all of the coaches who have offered me on the phone
a lot. I also talk to Ole Miss' coaches a lot. USM and Nebraska call my coach
a lot. I have spoken to the Nebraska coaches on the phone one time, but Southern
has been going through my coach."
The All-State selection had a chance
to take in Ole Miss' Jr Day this past weekend.
"I have to say that
I definitely like all of the new coaches at Ole Miss. I met Coaches Dameron and
Austin on an unofficial visit two weekends back when I just drove down there for
the day, but I had not met all of the other coaches. I really like those guys
a lot. Coach (Derrick) Nix recruits my area, and I really like him. He is cool.
But the highlight was meeting Coach Nutt after Jr Day was over. He said he really
liked me a lot, and he liked my film. He told me that he wanted to see me around
there more and wanted to build a better relationship with me. He wants to follow
up with me because he likes me a lot."
Cameron knows quite a bit about
the Rebels.
"I grew up a huge Ole Miss fan. As a kid, I went to as
many of their football and basketball games as I could. Everyone around this area
are die hard Ole Miss fans."
The irony in the situation is that Cameron's
older brother, Addison Lawrence, is now a redshirt
freshman at Mississippi State.
"I guess it was kind of a weird situation.
I guess Addison felt that is where he needed to be. It was best for him. But it
was not that big of a deal. The majority of my friends go to Ole Miss, so."
Will
Addison play a factor in Cameron's personal decision?
"It is not going to be a big factor for
me. I would like to go some where and make my own name. It is not a big factor
for me, with Addison being at MSU. I am keeping things open."
But
there are still several positives that the Dogs have going for themselves.
"I
just like the staff and atmosphere at MSU. I feel real comfortable going down
there. That is what I like about them."
Oklahoma State also has a
selling point that no one else seems to have right now.
"The thing
about them is that they have not signed a QB in their past two signing classes,
and they want me to play QB. It is an opportunity to play early."
Duke's
coaching staff just happens to have many of the former Ole Mis assistants and
head coach at the helm.
"I never really got a chance to get to know
them personally while they were at Ole Miss, but I did get to see how they coached.
Coach Cutcliffe puts a lot of QB's int he NFL, and he is noted to be one of the
great developers at QB, so that is a big. Plus, if you get a degree from Duke,
you are in pretty good shape (laugh).
And academics are not taken lights
around the Lawrence household as Cameron sports a 3.7 Core GPA and a 21 on the
ACT.
"Football can only take you so far. At some point, you have to
grow up and enter the real world."
Cameron continues on with the schools
he in interested in.
"At Alabama, you have Nick
Saban. I think he is on track, well, they had the #1 recruiting class last
year. I just think you could see them playing for a national championship in a
couple of years. That is definitely pretty big."
"And Ole Miss,
it is so close to home, and a bunch of my friends go there. That is going to be
pretty big. Plus, I like their facilities, they are top notch. And of course,
I like their staff. I like a lot about Ole Miss."
"Memphis, they
are really close to home, only 45 minutes. I have not met all of their coaches,
but the few that I have met, I really like them. They play an exciting style of
offense too."
