Upland (Calif.) quarterback Josh Nunes, one of the West's top passers in the class of 2009, added his seventh offer on Thursday, and his third from the Pac-10.
"Coach Salter brought (Nunes) into his office after his work out in the weight room. (Coach) Al Simmons and Cal Head Coach Jeff Tedford were on Coach Salter's cell phone waiting to tell Nunes that they were going to offer him," said Upland recruiting coordinator Mike Esquivel. "Josh enjoyed his trip to Berkeley last May at he participated in the Elite 11 regional camp there and (he) will be making a trip back up there in May of this year to compete again at the Elite 11. He will make an unofficial trip a month prior to Berkeley on April 12th to attend Cal's Jr Day."
Nunes was pleasantly surprised by the offer.
"The offer from Cal was a total surprise," said Nunes. "I was so excited to hear that they had offered me. They have a strong, rich tradition of winning up there and having a great coaching staff from top to bottom every year. Coach Tedford has coached many great quarterbacks in the past and Cal seems to always be a national contender on a consistent basis each season. Since I plan on going into the engineering field, Cal is an obvious choice in that field, since they are among the top engineering programs in the nation. It was a great honor to talk to Coach Tedford and receive an offer. I have great respect for him as a coach on how he has developed players like Kyle Boller, Aaron Rodgers and Nate Longshore."
With seven offers over all, including offers from Stanford, Hawaii, Utah, San Diego State, Arizona and Colorado, Nunes is getting closer to narrowing things down.
"I'm still wide open on which college I would like to attend, but I know pretty soon I'm going to have to start narrowing it down," said Nunes.
Nunes is planning unofficial visits to Oregon, Oregon State, Boise State, BYU and Utah during spring break. He's already unofficially visited Stanford and UCLA.
