Itawamba AHS Indians' head coach Jamie Mitchell was not surprised in the least.
"He's as good as your going to find," said Coach Mitchell. "He's the best defensive line player I have had in 19 years of coaching, but he is a little undersized."
The Indians used Shumpert on both sides of the ball last season and expect to do the same this year.
"He played outside and inside for us," said Mitchell. "We moved him around a good bit, so people couldn't get to him. Mississippi State has offered him as a fullback and I understand that. He's 6-0, 238 pounds, so that's undersized on the defensive line especially in the SEC."
The fullback position is an integral part of the Bulldogs' offense, so Coach Mitchell believes Shumpert would have his opportunities to make plays.
"Coach Grimes told us that fullbacks are hard to find," said Mitchell. "William catches the ball well out of the backfield and he runs it well. I am sure Mississippi State's offer is the first of many."
While more schools may enter the competition for Shumpert's signature, Coach Mitchell believes the Bulldogs are in good shape to ink the talented prepster.
"He likes Mississippi State a lot," said Coach Mitchell. "We've camped there the past couple of years and he's real comfortable there. I expect them to be in contention to sign him."
