Benton Has First Two Offers
It was only a matter of time for Shamari Benton. Those who had seen him play wondered why he hadn't pulled in any offers yet. Many agreed it was because of a lack of position. At the New Level Athletics passing camp in Akron, Benton showed he could play safety and play it well. Once that was settled, it was inevitable the offers would come. "I got two offers in less than 24 hours," Benton reported, "I got one Friday night from Eastern Michigan and Saturday, [Central Michigan head coach Butch Jones] told me he wants me to play for him as a true freshman." The EMU offer came after Benton visited practice on Thursday and the CMU offer happened during a visit to Mount Pleasant on Friday. "I visited EMU for a practice," Benton said, "the practice was great and the coaches are intense. They have two former Rice players on their team and would be glad to have a third. I think highly of the EMY program because they always had interest in me since I was a freshman and now they're my first offer." As for the Chippewas of CMU, they made an impression on Benton as well. "The CMU team is like no other team in the MAC. I truly believe they can compete with any team in the Big Ten. Their facilities are better than I expected and the coaches really gave me a 'welcome home' feeling." With two in the books for Benton, there is little doubt more offers will be rolling in for this talented prospect over the next few months.
