Iowa Scores Big In Small Town

Kirk Ferentz and his Hawkeye staff have uncovered a couple of hidden gems in 2002. Clinton, Iowa offensive lineman Clint Huntrods has the potential to be a big time player in Iowa City.

Kirk Ferentz was looking to the future when he offered 6-foot-6, 260-pound, offensive lineman Clint Huntrods.

Huntrods is a farm boy from Collins, Iowa and his high school coach says he’ll do the Iowa program proud.

“Not many people knew about Clint,” Rob Luther said. “We’re a small 2A school that’s consolidated with two other communities.

“When coach Ferentz was deciding whether or not to offer Clint a scholarship, I told him that if he isn’t anything at Iowa, he’ll do everything right for the program.

“Clint Huntrods is a fantastic kid. He’s a National Honor Society member, he’s our team captain and he’s a hard worker.

“Clint kills the weight room and he’s just a pup right now. Wait until he gets a few years in that Iowa weight room.”

Were there any other schools involved in the recruitment of Clint Huntrods?

“Not really, Actually Clint grew up an Iowa State fan. We’re only 25 miles from Ames. When Iowa offered Clint. I called Dan McCarney at Iowa State and told him. Iowa State offered a scholarship the next day.

“Clint is such a great young man that after he verbally committed to Iowa, he drove to Ames to tell coach McCarney in person. He said he needed to tell him in person.

“Iowa is getting a good football player, with a great head on his shoulders and a tremendous work ethic.” Luther said.

Sometimes the big fish aren’t in the ocean. Sometimes they are right in your back yard.
