Bell Finds True Love
After five years in the recruiting business there is not much that surprises me anymore. From time to time I still get caught off guard. On Saturday, I can honestly say I was caught by surprise. As I am nestled in my recliner with my laptop and cell phone watching the Big Ten Network's Spring Football Showcase. My phone beeps and it is a text message coming in from five-star linebacker Dorian Bell. Bell Text: I'm in love Bob. Now, immediately I'm thinking to myself, why is Dorian telling me this. Has he found a new girlfriend? Then I figured out that it had to be something about Ohio State, because earlier in the day he told me he was on his way there. My Text Back: With who? Bell Return Text: With Ohio State…lol Ah, finally it all clicked for me. The Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway star had been trying to tell me that he was having a great time in Columbus. Now, for those of you who do not know Bell let me explain something. This is out of character for him. He is usually a little guarded with most people about this stuff. I knew from previous conversations that he definitely liked the Buckeyes, but now he was making it no secret. Of course I had to ask him if he was going to commit and he said he had to speak with his mother (Nancy Bell) and his high school coach (Terry Smith). Dad (Joel Bell) was already on board. He and Dorian's uncle had accompanied Dorian to Ohio State. Dorian said he'd call me on the way home and we spoke at about 9:30 p.m. I called once and got no answer. Then my phone rang back and it was a very sleepy Bell on the other end. He explained that he had fallen asleep and then his dad playfully shined a light in his eyes to get him up. He checked his phone and missed about ten calls. Even though he had fallen asleep, upon his awakening his new case of Buckeye fever had not gone away. "I spent all day up there with my dad and my uncle," Bell said. "We got there and we went into the recruiting lounge. I had a chance to speak with (Luke) Fickell and (Jim) Tressel. Then I met most of the other coaches. We ate lunch and then we went down to the game. "After the game we were in the locker room and I got the chance to talk with Coach Fickell some more. He was telling my dad what would happen if I go there. What I would do as a student and as a player." Luke Fickell has a way with recruits. He is young enough that he still relates well with them and it seems most have a very hard time saying "No" to the enthusiastic former Buckeye defensive star. "Fickell is the man," Bell continued. "He is cool. I would say he is probably one of the coolest college coaches that I have met. I really like the whole staff at Ohio State." Of course at Ohio State, the atmosphere never hurts when it comes to impressing a young prospect. "It was very exciting," Bell stated. "All those fans still showed up and watched the entire game, even though it was raining. They acted like it was a real game with all the tailgating and everything. The fans at Ohio State are great." What is rather is humorous is the reason why Bell was so infatuated with the Buckeyes so early. Most think that it would be because they have had such a good team, but it is really much simpler than that. "They were the first team to call me on the first day that they could call recruits," Bell said. "Ohio State, Colorado, Notre Dame and Illinois all did. That showed me just how much they wanted me there." So it would be safe to say that Ohio State is the clear leader for Bell and a commitment could be on the horizon? "They are my leader," Bell said. "I didn't want to do anything without speaking with Coach Smith and my mom. I have to see what she thinks first." Bell and Coach Smith kept in contact through out the day via text message. "He asked me what my dad's opinion was," Bell said of Smith. "He said , well you really can't go wrong with Ohio State." Now it may only be a matter of getting the approval of mom.
